Behind The Artist: Eminem

Track: Beautiful

Watch The Beautiful Video Here!

The song 'Beautiful' is telling the story of how  anyone or anything can be great. We see Eminem walking around abandoned buildings as if retracing his grim past. I like to think this video is about how poverty and a failing economies have an effect on an individual.

The genre of this music video is generally known as rap/hip hop, it is also targeted at mainly male teens. This video shares striking similarities with many of its counter parts in that it uses an extract from other older songs, this song from Eminem and lil Wayne incorporates the same technique. The use of older songs, is there to signify that this song is about something that happened around the time that this song was popular, most likely in relation to a poignant time in the history of the rapper.

The generic conventions of the rap genre will be themes such as the rapper him self looking distressed or serious as opposed to happy and  relaxed. The colors used during a rap video might be expected to be alot darker and will also be situated in places which denote poverty or a place which is of low affluence state.  I may also add that Eminem himself seems to be wearing clothes which are typical of that of a rap artist; baggy and loose suggesting a leisurely towards his own appearance. The way he acts is also quite anti social avoiding eye contact with the audience and his body language is rather shrunk.

The lyrics suggest  a person that feels he/she is being oppressed by their peers and some one who has become isolated from the world around them simply down to the way they dress, look or act. I believe that this song is directly associated to Eminem him self , it paints the picture of how he decides to behave in situations were he is made to feel uncomfortable or like an out cast. I am sure that given the business he works in and the snobbery that comes along with that; being a white rapper would have been very difficult for him and so he may have had these awkward times quite regularly.

Not only is he basically telling us his life story, he is also stepping up to the plate and acting as the ambassador for any body who has ever felt or is currently feeling isolated and alone. These are common traits usually associated and experienced by teenagers, so therefore the song has been specifically manufactured to attract the attention of his most loyal demographic.

The Name Eminem Signifies rebellion and anger at society. The name is believed to have originated during a car journey whereby Eminem (who at the time was known as Marshall Mathers) was playing around with ideas for names and put the two first letters of both of his names together to get M'n'M.

Image of the Artist

I get the feeling that Eminem in this video and in many of the others wants to portray himself as being a lone soldier, left to wander through life forced to relive his dark and broken past. You also get the sense that although he may try to be a reserved person; he still finds himself lashing out at anyone who dares to cross him.

The Video opens with Eminem walking into what seems to be a church or train station which is completely abandoned and vacant. This empty hall and communal are symbolizes a place which we would imagine was, once, at the heart of a place bustling community however has now been left for ruin. Putting Eminem and just a couple of other people in there; shows that he is still very much connected with this place and that it has a real significant meaning to him, as he along with the few people left have not forgotten about this buildings history. Having them walking along aimlessly makes them seem almost like lost souls left to walk alone forever.

This type of imagery will appeal to the teenage audience, they are at a time in their lives when the world is a vast and confusing place and they may feel very alone in what they are currently experiencing, just like the struggles Eminem describes in this song.

It opens with a low angle shot showing the big building, I suppose that this is to give the impression of this place being quite imposing and important.
