Behind the Artist: Analysis of Star theory

So given what Richard Dyer has said regarding his Star Theory i am going to apply this to pop star, Taylor Swift.

Taylor Swift - Fearless Album Cover
  • There are a few different ideas' that this picture is hinting at, for instance her face is heavily made up to give her the sense of being a pampered and wealthy. Her face seems to shine as if she is glowing making her seem like a prized possession and a real role model as opposed to just another girl.
  • The image that Taylor Swift prides herself on is what is typically known as the Pop Princess, She encapsulates the idea of being a Rapunzel like figure who is wanted and desired by every man around. Her hair is what really conveys this message in this shot, it seems to have a life all of its own and looks as though it is unraveling before our very eyes.
  • The fonts used in this particular album cover tell us further about the image Taylor Swift is trying to become. Her name looks as though it has been hand written, suggesting this artist has a very natural side. The fact that the font has many curls and flicks helps to give her name and image a very feminine edge. Meanwhile the word 'fearless' has been done using a strong and very formal font, therefore giving a sense that although she maybe the soft pop princess her audience is familiar with; she does have a harder and more defensive edge to her.
So then, we see that the music label has tried to position taylor as being a very pretty and incredibly wealthy princess character that is also down to earth and some what genuine. The afore mentioned techniques I believe further defend Richard Dyers, Star theory and help to also put it in a more understandable context.
