Behind the Artist: Choosing the name (Preliminary Work)

We were told to Pick a piece of paper out of a hat to decide which type of musical artist we would be basing our preliminary on. I happened to pick out the type 'Boy Band', this meant that we had to create our own boy band complete with a digipack (Its basically a full album cover, front, back and sides) and also a name.

In this post I am going to be showcasing some of the possibilities we cam up with and also what we decided best symbolized our band. When creating a boy band it is important to understand the generic conventions that they follow in order to help you pick the most suitable name for them.

Here are some ideas we came up with based on the conventions we had discussed and also extensive research into other already successful boy bands.

1. Y.O.L.O
As a  group we identified that alot of BB(boy band) names were abbreviations and also most commonly had two to three syllables, Thats why at first we believed that YOLO would be an ideal name for our band. However after some stern debate we decided that it was a word which has been associated to so many things might mean that our band would get lost in the fray and would not become synonymous with the band.

2. BOYS 'R' US
This was the name chosen by my partner. While it does follow the general conventions of being friendly and genuine, I felt that it could be very easily manipulated to have quite seedy and dark meanings.Other media will pick up on small things such as the name of the band and so if it isn't water tight then it could really hurt the reputation of the band.

3. The Trendsetters
I suggested this one, however on my second judgement I decided that it had more of a country and western feel and a slightly indie edge to it so we decided not to use this  Again however it is an honest and genuine sounding name however peoples first hand impressions maybe warped a little as I don't feel it delivers the correct message of a boy band. It seems from this picture that are already an established hip hop band.

                                                 4. Snap Back  Boys
This was another of my rejected ideas, I felt it carried greater connotations of a rock punk band than a boy band. I know however that the Snap Back is becoming more and more fashionable therefore that was the reason for choosing this name.

5. True Men
True Men was our final choice of name, we decided that it was a good fit as it followed the traditions of most 90's to early naughties bands in that they had a quite soft and gentle approach as to how these bands were being presented. They were bands that your nan, your mum and your sister all loved and listened to. Therefore I believe for its simplicity and genuine nature this would be the best name for our boy band.

After rigorous discussion with my partner he decided that BOYS R US would be the best name to represent our band; therefore that is the one we are going to use.
