Behind the Artist: Todorov: Five stages theory

Todorov argues that there are five stages a music video will take from start to finish.

The five stages consist of:
  •  Equilibrium: A point of stability, there does not seem to be anything wrong with the picture being presented to us. Everything is calm and under control.
  • Disequilibrium: A plot device is introduced into the video to create drama or unsettle this calm, ordinary picture.
  • The re-cognitive state: This is the point at which our video realizes the issue and thus sets out to amend the issue.
  • New Equilibrium: The video will then circle back round to the beginning with another state of calm and tranquility.
