Behind the Artist: Conventions of Kanye West and Hip Hop

This is Heartless by Kanye West.

Top Conventions of Kanye Wests videos and the genre of Hip Hop
  • All eyes on me...
One of the key features in his videos and in most hip hop videos is that the focus seems to be mainly on the artist themselves as oppose the drama unraveling behind them. This emphasis on the artist talking directly creates a connections with the singer/rapper and the audience.
  • I wear the trousers!
Both videos portray him as being the one in control of the situation, he seems like a strong character and having the video from his perspective makes it seem as though the world revolves around him. We never hear the woman's say either, implying that he may be rude and inconsiderate towards the women he dates.

  • With great imagery comes great conceptualisation
In both videos the setting is somewhat out of this world. The first sees Kanye in a heaven like environment obviously playing on the idea of Zeus and the strong connection he has with power. In the second video he and his ex are in a cartoon world, I would imagine this is to say that the reality of what actually happened should be censored and protected from public view.  By using loud imagery such as this it makes it easier for us as an audience to understand what message the artist is trying to get across.
